A Broome County Jail inmate has been charged with assault after a guard was injured following a search.

Authorities say 30-year-old Jason Wheeler of Endicott was moved to the Special Housing Unit at the town of Dickinson facility operated by the Sheriff's Office Correction Division.

According to Sergeant James Guinan, Wheeler was shifted from the general jail population for violating rules.

Wheeler is accused of punching a jail guard in the face in the September 25th incident.

The guard sustained an injury to his left eye. He was treated and has since returned to work.

Wheeler was charged with second-degree assault as a result of the alleged attack.

Authorities say Wheeler already was being held on several felony charges, including two burglary counts, an arson count and a probation violation.
