Emerald Ash Borer Found in Delaware, Otsego Counties

The emerald ash borer continues to spread across upstate New York.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says the ash tree-killing insect has been confirmed for the first time in Delaware and Otsego counties, near the village of Unadilla. It was reported by a logger working in a private woodlot.

New York now has 15 counties where the ash borer has been found. DEC says most of the infested areas are small and localized, with more than 98 percent of the state's forests not yet affected.

The agency has enacted a quarantine encompassing all or part of 20 counties south of the thruway. It prohibits any movement of ash wood out of the area. The state also prohibits movement of firewood more than 50 miles from its source.
