Cooperstown, NY – Millions of people in this country suffer from pain associated with chronic wounds that won’t heal. And until now many patients in the nine county region Bassett serves had to travel long distances to find a comprehensive wound care center.

The specialists at Bassett’s new Center for Wound Healing, located at Hartwick Seminary Specialty Services, are trained in the use of advanced dressings and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to help patients heal more quickly and get back to living life the way they want.

Eric Mooney, attending plastic surgeon at Bassett Healthcare explains how hyperbaric oxygen therapy works.

"Essentially, a person comes in to a chamber and there they breathe 100 percent oxygen under pressure," he said. "What this basically does is saturate the blood and blood serum with oxygen and this in turn elevates the oxygen saturation in the tissue. This in turn then triggers several mechanisms of wound healing."

The Bassett Healthcare Network Center for Wound Healing is on State Route 28, about four miles south of Cooperstown.
