Cooperstown, NY – Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown has a new Division Chief of Cardiac Surgery. Dr. John Kelley takes over the position with previous experience as Chief of Cardiac Surgery at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica and nearly 20 years of experience as a cardiac surgeon in central New York.

Dr. Kelley, who has been at Bassett four years, completed his Cardiac Surgery Fellowship at Albany Medical Center and has practiced in the central New York region since completing his training.

Kelley takes over at a time when the Bassett Heart Care Institute is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Over a decade ago, Bassett made the commitment to bring heart care to this region of central and upstate New York because people who live in more rural counties needed access to the same specialty heart care available in more populous areas of the state.

Dr. Robert Lancey arrived in 2003 to lead that effort. Dr. Lancey is now leaving Bassett to take a position in Virginia.
