Country singer Mary Chapin Carpenter played to a sold out crowd at the Foothills Performing Arts Center on Wednesday night.

This might be the ideal type of show for Foothills.  Carpenter, a multi-Grammy Award-winning singer, tends to be on the softer more contemplative side of the music spectrum, and that suits this concert hall just fine.

Carpenter rolled out a litany of songs from her overstuffed songbook, including re-visiting some songs that were not hits, but were faves of her fans over the years.  Two of these stood out, including Stones in the Road (1994) and The Moon and St. Christopher, which never gets old.  She also ripped through her rocking roadhouse hits including Passionate Kisses, Down at the Twist and Shout, Sometimes You're the Windshield and Sometimes Your the Bug, He Thinks He'll Keep Her and others.  These got the crowd clapping and cheering along with every chorus.

MCC seemed ;like she really enjoyed being in Oneonta and kept the chatter to a minimum.  You had to like it, however when she said, "I had a lovely day here in your city.  I spent a thousand hours at the wonderful Green Toad Book Store."  My wife, Trish, who was sitting next to me and works apart time at the Toad, could barely conceal her delight.

Opening act Caitlyn Canty, a diminutive coffee house chanteuse on her way up, exhibited a fine vocal style and showcased her intriguing songwriting talents.  She had a gentle humor that produced some giggles from those close to the stage.  However her thin voice seemed to get swallowed up in the large hall.  She mentioned she will be back to the area in January at the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown, and perhaps that smaller venue will better accommodate her obvious talents.

Another sold-out, fun and enjoyable evening at our wonderful Foothills Performing Arts Center in Oneonta.
