ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The state parks office is encouraging New Yorkers to start the new year with a hike.

The state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation says it will sponsor guided hikes at 23 state parks and historic sites on New Year's Day as part of the third annual First Day Hikes program taking place across the nation. The program encourages people to begin the new year by getting outdoors for a healthy, family-friendly hike on Jan. 1 at a state park or historic site close to home.

The 2014 programs include a seal walk, winter woodlands, a snowshoe waterfall hike and pet-friendly treks. Details about the hikes are listed at nysparks.com

There are two hikes available in our area:  Chenango Valley State Park and Clark Reservation State Park.
