Twitter Abound with Racism After Nina Davuluri Wins Miss America
Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, won Miss America on Sunday. She became the first winner to be of Indian descent in the competition’s history.
Thousands of Americans responded to the announcement with shocking racism, ignorance and anger on Twitter. Some users incorrectly called Davuluri a Muslim. Another asked when a white woman would win Miss America.
Davuluri won the competition on a platform of “Celebrating Diversity through Cultural Competency,” and the social media response proved there is a lot of work to be done in her native country.
Perhaps some of the worst racist comments came from users questioning if Davuluri was actually a member of Al Qaeda.
There were, however, many thousands celebrating Davuluri’s accomplishment while also criticizing those who tweeted racist remarks.

If you're upset that Miss America isn't white, I'm sure there are some Native American's who'd love to help you brush up on your history.

The liberal Miss America judges won't say this – but Miss Kansas lost because she actually represented American values. #missamerica

Miss Georgia or Miss Kansas should have won… But NOOOOO they let Miss New York go to the finals and she's obviously retarded. #MissAmerica

Sounds like some American "patriots" need a refresher course on how NOT to be a sore loser… or a stupid, redneck racist. #MissAmerica
