Yesterday, the first Friday of June, was National Doughnut Day (or for the lazy, National Donut Day).  A day to celebrate everyone's favorite breakfast, or anytime, bakery item.

As for me, I will take a donut from almost anyplace.  Plain, chocolate, glazed, any kind.  Cover them with peanuts?  Stand back.  Fill them with jelly?  Now, I am in trouble. And when they light up the neon sign in the window saying that the Krispy Kreme donuts are ready, well, don't get in my way, brother.

I am not a fan of Dunkin Donuts coffee.  But, for me, they are still the best donuts around.  Period.  And yes, I had one yesterday.  OK, OK.  So I had two.

How many remember Spaulding Bakery donuts?  Although they celled them krullers at the time.  My dad had a grocery store in Sidney in the 1960s and I worked there before and after school.  On Spaulding Kruller delivery day, you could always see me hanging around the store waiting for the delivery truck to come across the old Sidney bridge.  These donuts were big sellers, not like Entenmanns, which came out of New York City, or even Freihoffers, which came out of Schenectady, New York. But Spaulding definitely had a die hard loyal fan base.  And I was definitely a charter member of it.

There are so many "national food days" on the calendar I cannot even keep track of them.  Asparagus Day?  I'll pass.  Watermelon Day?  Not a fan.  Turnip Day?  Say what??

But I DO know when National Donut Day is!

Did you have a donut yesterday?  And, do you remember Spaulding Krullers?
