City of Oneonta police say the house at 8 Hazel Street suffered significant damage Monday night after an Oneonta woman backed into the front of the residence with her 2011 Toyota Highlander.

Patricia Bennett, 56, of 3 Hazel Street, told police that when she put her vehicle in reverse it took off uncontrollably.

Bennett was charged Monday with driving while ability impaired by alcohol and unsafe backing. She will appear in Oneonta City Court at a later date.

The residence at 8 Hazel Street belongs to Joseph and Lucy Bernier. Joseph is retired. He was the city's engineering administrator and community development director. His wife, Lucy, is Oneonta City Court Judge. The Berniers were not home at the time of the accident.
