Transcripts Released for SUNY Students Holding Debt

If you’re one of those people who still owe money to the State University of New York, Governor Kathy Hochul says she wants you to be able to get your college transcripts.

The Democrat has announced the State University of New York Board of Trustees has now ended the practice of withholding transcripts from students with outstanding balances.

Hochul is proposing legislation to stop withholding transcripts at all higher education institutions.

In a release from the governor’s office, officials say around 50 percent of SUNY students graduate debt-free but the other students have an unpaid balance of about $3,500 on average.

Those students with outstanding balances now are able to receive their transcript and possibly re-enroll in a campus, transfer credits, complete their degree or be able to use the college experience in their job and career search.

SUNY is also reviewing debt collection practices.
