The Carnegie Foundation has announced that SUNY Oneonta is one of the 119 U.S. colleges and universities to receive the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification, an elective designation that indicates institutional commitment to community engagement.

This important classification is awarded following a process of self-study by each institution, which is then assessed by a national review committee led by the Swearer Center for Public Engagement at Brown University, the administrative and research home for the Carnegie Community Engagement Classification.

“Service is one of the three core values SUNY Oneonta upholds,” said College President Barbara Jean Morris. “We are committed to living purposefully as a campus and this is a tremendous honor that supports our efforts to make community service and service learning a significant part of our students’ learning.”

SUNY Oneonta first received recognition of civic partnerships and service-learning activities from the Carnegie Foundation in 2011. The college is one the 75 institutions that have been re-classified this year.

SUNY Oneonta inspires students to make a difference through community service and service-learning. The Center for Social Responsibility and Community (CSRC) develops and coordinates volunteer and service-learning opportunities for students to learn new skills, think critically and to test new roles. The college provides service opportunities in local, regional, national and international settings. Faculty are actively involved in developing service-learning curricula that help students make the connection between classroom learning and the world.
