SUNY Trustees Select Interim Chancellor to Succeed Malatras

An interim chancellor has been chosen to lead the State University of New York system when embattled Jim Malatras leaves the job next month.

The SUNY board of trustees Monday announced SUNY Oswego President Deborah Stanley has been appointed to the post effective January 15.

Last May, Stanley said she planned to retire from her position at Oswego at the end of the year.

In a statement, SUNY board chairman Merryl Tisch said Stanley's "decades of leadership, commitment to academic excellence, and her unwavering support for students" make her "well-positioned" to serve the system's 64 campuses.

The New York Post had reported Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger was being considered as a possible interim chancellor. But Stenger had told WNBF News "it's not something I would be interested in, even if they asked me."

The SUNY board has announced it will launch a "global search" next month for a permanent chancellor.
