Residents of Herkimer and Mohawk are getting some help from the Salvation Army and the Red Cross. Emergency shelters are now available in Herkimer at the Salvation Army building on North Prospect Street and in Mohawk on East Main Street in the parking lot of Family Dollar. Anyone in need of food, clothing, water or cleaning supplies can go to either shelter. In the last two days the shelters have handed out more than 2,500 hot and cold meals, 5,000 cases of water and over 300 emergency clean up kits. In the next few days the Salvation Army is also expecting a mobile kitchen capable of producing 5,000 meals per day. Anyone interested in volunteering their time is asked to call the Mohawk Valley Volunteer Center at 315-223-3973
