Prepping Lunch Upstate NY School Cafeteria Workers Find Scorpion! [PIC]
There is nothing that could have prepared these elementary school cafeteria workers for what they found in a shipment of bananas at an Upstate New York primary school. One of them discovered a scorpion and it was alive!
What Was in The Shipment of Bananas?
Cafeteria workers at Stanford Gibson Primary School in the Norwich Central School District discovered a scorpion inside a shipment of bananas. The discovery was made when they were washing the bananas to get them ready to serve the students. The scorpion was quickly contained. Not sure if it was a coincidence it was found on Friday the 13th!
What Did They Do With the Scorpion?
The scorpion was quickly contained and all safety protocols were followed. Instead of just getting rid of the scorpion, the school turned it into a learning experience. They decided to give it to the high school zoology students. The students were able to learn more about it while putting it under a glowlight. They then fed it crickets and studied its behavior according to the school's Facebook page.
Are All Scorpions Deadly?
There are fifteen hundred species of scorpions and only about thirty of those are deadly. The one found in the box of bananas is from Guatemala and is only "mildly toxic" to humans. If stung by this species of scorpion, a human would feel a stinging sensation followed by burning and redness in the area.
