Conklin Teen Payton Gendron Indicted for Buffalo Mass Shooting

A grand jury has indicted 18-year-old Payton Gendron in connection with what police have said was a racially-motivated shooting spree in Buffalo that left ten people dead.

Gendron, a 2021 Susquehanna Valley High School graduate, appeared in Buffalo City Court Thursday morning.

The Conklin resident said nothing during the felony hearing. An Erie County prosecutor said the grand jury voted on Wednesday to indict Gendron. He had been charged with first-degree murder shortly after he was taken into custody at a Tops market in Buffalo Saturday afternoon.

Gendron, whose face was covered by a mask during the court appearance, was wearing an orange jail uniform.

Someone in the courtroom yelled "Payton you're a coward!" as police officers led him out of the courtroom. He is being held without bail.

Gendron is scheduled to return to Buffalo City Court on June 9.

According to the Erie County district attorney's office, the grand jury investigation has not been completed.

Gendron is accused of shooting nine people inside the supermarket and four people outside the store.

All but two of those shot were Black. Online postings attributed to Gendron indicated he chose the Buffalo store because of the neighborhood's large Black population.

Gendron's written statements described the racist motivation behind the planned mass shooting.
