On Sunday 19th January the Oneonta Branch of the NAACP, together with the City of Oneonta Commission on Community Relations and Human Rights, will celebrate Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela.

The event will coincide with the national observance of the civil rights leader’s birthday and will note the recent passing of the South African leader.

City of Oneonta Mayor, Richard Miller, will issue the City of Oneonta Proclamation honoring the two civil rights leaders and Roberto Barbosa will convey NYS Attorney General Schneiderman’s tribute. Lee Fisher, President of the Oneonta Branch of the NAACP, and Joyce Miller, Chair of the Commission on Human Rights, will lead the festivities. Rev. Nancy Russell, of the United Methodist Church and Olu Harding, pastor of the Elm Park United Methodist Church, will lead the community in the invocation and benediction.

The celebration will take place in the First United Methodist Church at 66 Chestnut Street, Oneonta, from 2 to 3:45 PM. The whole community is invited to enjoy the tributes, music, and refreshments. The celebration is free.
