Plainfield, New York Accident Shutters Roadway
On October 15, 2024, at around 9:20 a.m., New York State Police from Richfield Springs responded to a two-vehicle accident with injuries on US-20 in the town of Plainfield.
The investigation determined that a Ford Escape traveling east on US-20 crossed into the westbound lane and collided with the side of a tractor trailer. The driver of the tractor trailer was unable to avoid the Ford Escape, resulting in a sideswipe along the length of the tractor and trailer. The tractor trailer then lost control and struck a utility pole.
The driver of the Ford Escape, a 56-year-old woman from Sherburne, NY, was ejected from the vehicle but remained conscious at the scene. She was transported to Wynn Hospital in Utica by West Winfield Ambulance with serious injuries. A cat in a carrier inside the Ford Escape was taken to the SPCA in Cooperstown.
The 70-year-old male driver of the tractor trailer, from Westerlo, NY, was unharmed.
US-20 was closed due to low-hanging wires from the damaged utility pole and remains shut down with a detour in place.
The investigation is ongoing.
