NY Craft Brewers/Distillers Get a Jump on Sales Before Licensing
The New York State Liquor Authority is accepting applications for new permits that would allow craft beverage businesses to manufacture and sell alcohol beverages even before they get their full license.
Officials say the new permits can be processed and approved in less than a month. The full liquor license process generally takes six months.
Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo (D-Endwell) says the temporary permits make it easier for the small businesses to get their goods to market sooner and generate income. The Endwell Democrat says if the brewer or distiller has a location and is ready to operate, they should not have to endure delays waiting for the final license to clear.
Governor Kathy Hochul says the craft beverage sector creates jobs and drives tourism all over New York State.
According to a news release from the Governor’s office, the craft beverage industry in New York accounted for over $5 billion in revenue in 2018. That grew 230% over the past ten years.
New York ranks #1 in the U.S. for the number of hard cider distilleries and #2 for breweries and hard liquor distillers.
The fee for the temporary permit is $125. If the final permit isn’t awarded in 6 months. An extension of the temporary permit for another 3 months is available for another $50 fee.
