Nurses from around the state were in Albany on Wednesday for a rally and to lobby for bills that would mandate lower staffing ratios and regulations they say would improve patient safety and reduce injuries.

The bills have been around for a time and have been opposed by hospitals that claim the measures would be too costly.

Nurses want the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act, which calls for safe staffing for patients, and the Safe Patient Handling Act, which calls for a statewide safe patient handling policy, for all New York health care facilities.
