New York State is taking bids from software companies interested in working to set up a better system for the public and media to request records under the Freedom of Information Law.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced shortly after taking office as former Governor Andrew Cuomo stepped down that she would work to improve transparency in state government.

The Democrat’s office says the New York State Office of Information Technology Services has been directed to issue a Request for Quotes to secure a software platform to speed up and streamline the process for responding and processing FOIL requests.

State agencies have also been given authority to post commonly requested documents online and respond to FOIL requests on their own without Executive Chamber review.

The Governor’s Office says the Executive Chamber has been wading through a back-log of FOIL requests over the past seven months and have processed more in that time than in all of 2019.

The Office of Information Technology Services expects to finalize a software contract in the coming weeks.

Companies can submit proposals at https://its.ny.gov/document/open-foil-rfq.
