It has become one of the most anticipated days of the NHL season and it takes place New Years Day. It is the "Winter Classic,' and it is expected that the largest crowd to ever witness a NHL game will be there. This year, the Detroit Red Wings will take on the Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, and a crowd of more than 107,000 is expected at the "Big House."

Not only do fans look forward to the game, but in a USA Today article, TV analyst Pierre McGuire said that he has never talked to one player who did not want a chance to play in a Winter Classic. Remember, most of these guys grew up playing the game on lakes, pond and backyard rinks in Canada and the U.S. and all look forward to reliving some childhood memories.

It was 6 years ago that the Winter Classic really became classic when, during a game at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, snow started falling creating an awesome setting that is still talked about today by hockey fans.

Since then, outdoor games have been held at Wrigley Field, Fenway Park, Citizen's Bank Field in Philadelphia and other big stadiums. The Syracuse Crunch even hosted an American Hockey League game at the fairgrounds in Syracuse a couple of years ago. 107,000 people at a hockey game! It will be awesome!
