The city of Oneonta has announced that the lower level of the Municipal Parking Garage on Water Street will now require payment. Jeff House, of the Office of Community Development, said this measure will allow for longer term parking in the city.

“This is to allow particularly residents downtown -- people who may take the bus out of town for a few days or people who work at odd hours or all day long -- space where they can park and not have to worry,” House said.

In a press release, the city explained the rates that will be put into effect: Hourly parking will be $1 per hour for a maximum of seven hours; daily will be $8 per day for three days maximum; and monthly will cost $100 for 30 days.

The new meter has been installed in the parking garage and is clearly marked at the entrance of the facility.

“The meter will be easy to use,” House said. “It gives you prompts to tell you what to do and what money can be accepted, and as you buy a ticket, it will tell you right on the machine how long you have it for.”

The meter will accept coins, bills and credit cards for the user’s convenience. All parking slips dispensed by the meter should then be placed in the front windshield of the vehicle so that it is clear and visible to the parking enforcement officer.

The top and middle levels of the garage will remain free to users on a first-come, first-served basis, but the current time limits that exist will continue to remain in place.

The changes to the lower level of the Municipal Parking Garage will go into effect later this week, once signage is in place.
