SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Police in Syracuse say they don't know why a 29-year-old man was running around on a busy interstate highway, causing a two-vehicle crash that sent a toddler to the hospital.

Officials tell local media outlets that officers responding to a section of Interstate 81 around 5:40 p.m. Thursday found a 29-year-old Syracuse man running around on the northbound lanes. Police say a pickup truck was rear-ended by a car when the pickup's driver hit his brakes to avoid hitting the man.

No one was injured but police say a 2-year-old girl in the car was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Police say they charged the pedestrian with reckless endangerment. He's being held in the Onondaga County jail pending his arraignment Friday in Syracuse City Court.
