Beginning January 1st these five laws go into effect.

As the year comes to a close, lawmakers in New York had a busy year deciding whether or not to pass hundreds of laws and bills that were introduced in the Senate in 2023.

There were a staggering 682 bills signed into law in 2023, with 63 still awaiting New York Governor Kathy Hochul's signature (46 bills introduced in 2023 were vetoed) according to the New York Senate website.

Five New Laws Starting in 2024 in New York

Out of all of the new laws, there are five that many New Yorkers need to be aware of as the new year starts including a change to how old a lifeguard can be at pools, beaches, and children's camps.

1. Lifeguards can be 15 years old if they are directly supervised.

2. All Non-public schools in New York will have to provide free menstrual products.

3. The minimum wage in New York City, Westchester, and Long Island will increase to $16 per hour on January 1st. The remaining parts of New York will be raised to $15 per hour on January 1st.

4. The minimum age to operate an ATV in New York will be raided from 10 to 14.

New York Colleges Become More Transparent

The only other law besides the ones above that New Yorkers need to be aware of is specific to colleges. The "campus crime statistics" law will require colleges to post campus crime statistics on their websites and to investigate reported hate crimes. All institutions will also be responsible for informing their student body about how the college plans to prevent hate crimes in the future.
