The harsh reality is sinking in for spiedie lovers now that the signage has been removed from Lupo's S&S Char Pit on Binghamton's North Side.

The beloved restaurant at 6 West State Street grilled its final spiedies on January 15.

The 3,100-square-foot building that had been a destination spot for many Southern Tier residents for nearly 45 years is for sale.

Steve Lupo told WNBF News the lettering on the front of the building was removed about two weeks ago.

Lupo said a couple of inquiries had been received about the site before the property was listed.  The asking price for the fully-equipped restaurant is $320,000. The price without the equipment is $285,000.

The building originally was home to a Dairy Queen restaurant, which opened in December 1969. The S&S Char Pit started operations about nine years later.

Lupo said he plans to use the grills that had been in the restaurant for event catering in the future. He said Lupo's will continue to have a presence at the annual Spiedie Fest at Otsiningo Park and at the Dick's Sporting Goods Open at En Joie Golf Course in Endicott.

With the Binghamton restaurant closed, Lupo said he's getting an opportunity to relax a bit. Now, the focus is on the wholesale business operated by Sam Lupo & Sons. He said that business "is doing real well."

As for the future, Lupo said there are no plans to open another restaurant. But he's not completely ruling out the possibility. He said it's something that could be pursued "if the right place popped up" in the Triple Cities area.
