You’d think that we wouldn’t have to worry about the dangerous state of roads here in New York State until winter arrives - but think again.

We all know that snow, sleet and icy conditions can cause lots of skidding and sliding on our streets and highways, leading to some stressful commutes. Most New York State drivers know to use extra caution when traveling in winter weather, so they can keep themselves, their passengers, and their fellow drivers safe.

However, many New Yorkers don’t realize that the month of November is a prime-time for another risky road condition, and if drivers don’t stay alert and drive with care, they could slip off the road and cause a serious accident.

New York State One Of The Best For Fall Foliage

You’ve got to admit - New York is one of the best states in the country to see some beautiful fall leaves on the trees. Leaf-peepers around the Empire State love the vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves covering the Adirondacks, Finger Lakes, and other gorgeous regions.

We don’t have many weeks left to enjoy the colorful fall scenery before the weather turns frosty and the leaves start littering our lawns. In fact, lots of trees have already shed their leaves for the year.

It’s a bummer when we start to spot bare trees, because it means that  winter is officially around the corner. But there’s another reason to get wary about the falling leaves this time of year…

Here’s what you need to know.

Falling Leaves Are Dangerous For New York State Drivers

Leaves covering the streets aren’t just annoying to clean up; they can create extremely hazardous conditions on our New York roadways.

When leaves fall from the trees and accumulate on the ground, they can cover the pavement and sidewalks, making it hard for drivers to see important traffic indicators like turning lanes and crosswalks. It’s also nearly impossible to spot dangerous obstacles you’d want to avoid, like potholes.

Additionally, if the leaves are wet due to recent rainfall, they can make for some highly slippery conditions. Driving on wet leaves is just as dangerous as icy roads, and when you factor in high speeds and slamming brakes, it can make for some very scary situations.

  • Slow down your speed
  • Don’t slam on your brakes
  • Maintain a healthy distance from the driver in front of you (in case they start to skid)
  • Clean any and all leaves off of your car before driving
  • Replace your tires if they have poor tread

Remember, those beautiful falling leaves may look pretty, but if you’re not careful, they can cause some serious damage.
