Bald Eagle Seen Getting a Skunk in Western New York

Where is the best place to see a bald eagle in Western New York in the wild? Where do bald eagles go around the Buffalo area?

Of course, the Buffalo Zoo has bald eagles at the Zoo, but it is such a cool experience to see one of our Nation's birds right in their wild habitat.

• Point Gratiot Park in Dunkirk
• City Pier Park in Chautauqua
• Bald eagles you can go see frequently at Beaver Meadow Audubon Center in North Java near Buffalo. Officials there see between 3 and 4 sitting along the pond on the observation deck and you do not even need binoculars!

The best spot has to be City Pier Park, though. According to New York Audubon, there have been times when you can see up to 70 at one time!

It seemed like this weekend there were an unusually high amount of bald eagles spottings that people were posting up on Facebook--from Erie County to Genesee to Wyoming County. Take a look at at this bald eagle getting a skunk out in Warsaw.

You do not always have to travel south in order to see America's birds. One fisherman posted a bald eagle sighting while out on the Niagara River.

The Bald eagle is an America Endangered Species Act success story, too. In the 1970s, the bald eagle was on its way to becoming extinct, but after conversation efforts, they were taken off the list in 2007.

Did you know?

The oldest known bald eagle in the wild was at least 38 years old. It was hit and killed by a car in New York in 2015. It had been banded in New York state in 1977.
