I'm a baseball fan, and having grown up in Maine and Vermont, yes, I am a Red Sox fan.  Wait, make that a fan of the World Champion Red Sox! Anyway, as a young Bosox fan, I had a hero, and that hero was Carl Yastrzemski, Triple Crown winner and Hall of Famer. What he accomplished in 1967 when he led Boston to the World Series was incredible, right? Well, guess what. There might soon be another "Yaz" in the Major Leagues.

Mike Yastrzemski is fighting for a spot on the Baltimore Orioles roster after a fairly successful season at the Single A level last year. It's not Carl's son. It's his GRANDSON! The 23 year old scored a run against his granddad's old team yesterday in a spring training game and played right field. He was originally drafted by the Red Sox, but chose to go to college which didn't upset 74 year old Carl, who thought the pressure of being a Yastrzemski in a Red Sox uniform might be a little stressful, to say the least.

Sadly, Mike's father and Carl's son, also named Mike, passed away a few years ago at the age of 43, so Carl began helping his grandson develop his game. Not a bad advantage to have, getting coached by an all time great.

Take a listen to one of my favorite Yaz moments and favorite radio call from a game in Yankee Stadium in 1967. Still give me chills the way Ken Coleman describes the play.
