Happy Birthday Canned Beer! What Was Your First Beer?
Canned beer was born on this day in 1935. While it had been around for a while, this is when Kreuger Brewing first successfully marketed their beer in a can.
As we get older we forget a lot of things: your wife's birthday, your computer password, where you set your keys, what you had for breakfast. But why is it that no matter how old you get we somehow remember the first beer that we drank? Legally or not.
When I went off to college in 1967 I was still only 17 and not legal for beer drinking. But that summer before I went off to Albany I have vivid memories of me and my buddies piling into the back of Sam Hager's old pick up truck and heading up to a Masonville cabin for long nights of music, laughs and plenty of beer.
For me it was Schafer beer. Lots of my friends liked Genny and Budweiser, but I always found Schaefer to have a richer taste to it. In fact, many years later, in the 1970s when I lived in Houston, Texas. I remember my surprise at seeing Schaefer beer stocked in the local market. I was excited to buy it and take it home with me. My memories were fresh of those days back at Sodbuster's cabin in Masonvlille. And here I am about to drink a Schaefer beer again, decades later.
How shall I say...I was disappointed and could barely finish a can. How did I ever drink that stuff, I thought.
They say you can never go home again. Sorry, Scheafer....but thanks for the memories!
