One of America's most famous and popular voices has been stilled.

The great Merle Haggard died today on his 79th birthday.  His legendary status transcended all music genre's and he was considered to be an inspiration for not only today's young country singers but also those in the rock and roll field as well.  He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1994.  He has remained active despite declining health, and even released an album, "Django and Jimmie," last year.

Among his most memorable hits are "Okie from Muskogee," "The Fighting Side of Me," "Rambin' Fever," and "Working Man Blues."  He had 38 #1 songs.
