Cooperstown To Host ‘Lake Appreciation Day’ July 11
Lake Appreciation Day is coming up at Glimmerglass State Park in Cooperstown on Saturday, July 11th from 11am to 4pm. This event is to bring member of area environmental groups, lake organizations, residents, and families together for a day of fellowship and recreation on the shores of Otsego Lake. This event is free however, regular park admission fees apply.
This event has plenty for kids. Otsego County Conservation Association will hold two EcoTeam events for children. First, kids are invited to explore the world of birds at 8 a.m. with OCCA Program Director Jeff O’Handley. Participants will learn some of the basic skills of birding, including what to look for, how to use binoculars (participants must bring their own), and how to use a field guide. These skills will be applied in a birding walk around Glimmerglass State Park’s Beaver Pond.
At 1:30 p.m., O’Handley leads an exploration in search of aquatic life at the Beaver Pond. Using small nets, kids will capture and study the animals that live in the water, and will learn how these creatures are both connected and important to the lake environment. These programs are free but please pre-register for these by calling 547-4488 or e-mail programdirector@occainfo.org.
Lake Appreciation Day – co-sponsored by OCCA, the Otsego Lake Association, and Friends of Glimmerglass State Park – offers an 8 a.m. bird walk led by Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society members Becky Gretton and Eleanor Moriarty. Aquatic tank displays, barge tours, fly-tying demonstrations, exhibits and vendors will also be featured. Lunch is free to those who pre-register.
