Christmas traditions are wonderful.  You probably agree.  So many times these traditions reside in the hearts and minds of our elders.  I can completely understand that, and the younger ones in a family live and learn and are responsible for carrying these forward to the next generations.

I just got back from my old home in Sidney. My Mom has a few Christmas traditions that she hauls out every year.  Year after year.  They were funny and weird when we were little; then amazing when we had our own kids; and are so charming now that we are older.

My Mom hangs stocking from our banister every year.  The same stockings we have had forever, from the only banister she ever known.  She, and Dad, bought these stocking as we were born.  8 children in all.  She bought my older sister Fran's stocking in 1948, mine in 1949 and then all the rest.  And she still has them.  She had them made at Kent's Department store in Sidney.

Looking at the banister in my old house in Sidney today I was amazed at several things. First, the sheer number of them.  39!  That's all the kids, spouses, grandchildren and great-children.  The other thing that amazes me is that she still has them...and knows where they are and have been for 66-years.

Old Christmas traditions are the best......
