The State Attorney General’s Office announced Tuesday a $2.4 million settlement with one of the nation’s largest medical waste disposal companies, Stericycle, Inc., for improperly overcharging nearly 1,000 New York government entities, including police and fire departments, rescue squads, schools, jails and hospitals across the state.

Stericycle implemented a plan in 2003 to charge automatic price increases without giving notice to these customers and in violation of the contract terms.

In the southern tier, the New York Veterans Home in Oxford was overcharged over $5,519, and Broome Community College was overcharged by nearly $14,000. Every impacted government entity will be paid 100 percent of the overcharges, and automatic increases by Stericycle will be discontinued.
