The holidays are a difficult time for the region's blood supply. Regularly scheduled donors are usually caught up with seasonal activities, leading to a drop in scheduled donations.

Samantha Davenport, Medical Director of Transfusion Services at Bassett Healthcare Network, says it’s tougher than usual this year due to Hurricane Sandy.

"The Red Cross had to cancel slight over 360 separate blood drives due to the impact of that weather," Davenport said. "It also affected distribution and processing centers. So we're still digging out of that hole a little bit."

To help out you can donate blood this week in Cooperstown. American Red Cross is holding two blood drives at Basset Hall Auditorium. The first one is Thursday from 12:30-6:30 p.m. and the second on Friday from 8:30a.m.-1:30 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome but you can also register for a donation time by calling 547-3701.
