Richfield Springs, N.Y. Has Some Mighty Fine Murals!
Richfield Springs (Otsego County) boasts some pretty terrific public art.
Of special note is the historic 1942 John W. Taylor mural which graces the wall of the community's post office. The painting was one of a series of post office murals commissioned during President Franklin Roosevelt's 1940's era WPA projects. This beautiful mural depicts the typical setting of rural life found throughout Upstate New York, and in particular the area surrounding Richfield Springs.
But on a recent visit to Richfield Springs I came upon an old feed store (now closed) at 54 Lake Street. The whole bottom of the outside of the building is adorned with some pretty amazing enormous murals which show the village during various times of its history. They really are very impressive. (Oh, the feed store is for sale for $215,000, pretty steep but remember...it includes the murals!)
