UTICA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities have released the name of the man who died in an exchange of gunfire with police in a central New York park.

Police in Utica tell local media outlets that 19-year-old Jessie Lee Rose has been identified as the armed man encountered by an officer responding to a report of shots fired Sunday afternoon at Addison Miller Park.

Officials say either Rose shot himself, aimed the weapon in the direction of the officer or prompted an exchange of gunfire with the officer that left Rose dead.

Police are awaiting autopsy results to determine if Rose was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his chest or gunfire from the officer.

The shooting occurred shortly after Utica's Boilermaker Road Race involving more than 11,000 runners ended near the park.
