Lawmakers in Albany passed the nation's first gun-control bill since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., last month. It now heads to Governor Andrew Cuomo's desk to be signed into law.

The bill passed the State Senate on Monday but was too late to be voted on by the Assembly then. Instead, the Assembly met Tuesday afternoon and passed the new set of gun regulations.

Cuomo has called it the toughest gun-control bill in the country. He called for a tightening of the state's assault weapons ban as well as background checks for all people purchasing guns in private transactions. He also looked to get more restrictions on high-capacity magazines.

The bill calls for statewide gun registry and a uniform licensing standard. Currently, each county sets its own standards. Further, people could only purchase magazines that carry seven bullets rather than 10.
