Authorities in the region are investigating what appears to be a an increase in reports of the passing or attempted passing of forged money.

September 17, a man passed a fake $20 bill at the Sunoco in West Corners.

Now, Broome County Sheriff’s officials say they have a Port Crane man in custody for two incidents in the Town of Chenango.

43 year old Brian Potter is accused of attempting to make purchases at Rite Aid and Creature Comforts Pet Store, both on Upper Front Street using counterfeit $20 and $10 bills.

The store employees provided a description of the vehicle the suspect was driving and the Deputy says he spotted it minutes after the report.

Potter was stopped on Front Street in the Town of Dickinson and arrested for two felony forgery counts.

The Deputy says during the investigation he found a pen designed to test for counterfeit currency in the vehicle.

Potter is being held in the Broome County Jail without bail.
