Dr. Cornel West, author, philosopher and activist, addressed a packed house (2,689 in attendance) last night at the Dewar Arena at SUNY Oneonta on the twentieth anniversary of the infamous "Black List."  I attended.  He spoke for almost an hour about the critical issues of the day, particularly those issues which impact young people.

West gave an impassioned plea for sensibility, self-respect and  introspection.  He illuminated the concept of all of us being in the same family together and that we need to exercise brotherhood for our fellow man, especially those in need and on the margins of life.  He spoke of intolerance, racism, homophobia and the concept of fellowship to our fellow man.   His rhetoric was met with tumultuous ovations by the mostly student audience.

I must admit it was quite inspiring to be an "old beard" amongst a throng of such excited and youthful exuberance.  It was an impressive and overwhelmingly positive experience and I would give all the young people in there a big "high five" for attending in such large numbers.

Congratulations to SUNY Oneonta for a very interesting evening in "The City of the Hills."
