Since 1920, the Disabled American Veterans program began operation nationally it has been providing free transportation for disabled American veterans to appointments.

Over the years the program has grown and has reached rural areas of New York. William Gleason, recruiter for the Veterans Administration in Syracuse was at the Norwich fire station Saturday afternoon to sign up volunteer drivers.

"Before we came down here we were really hurting," he said. "We only had two drivers and we cut from five days down to three days and they were struggling with that."

The VA picked up 17 volunteers in Norwich that will enable the DAV transportation program to expand back to 5 trips a week to Syracuse and add 5 more trips per week to Binghamton and Bainbridge.

Anyone who would like to volunteer for the program call Gleason at 315-425-4343 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
