Twin Tiers residents and millions of other people in the eastern United States are paying close attention to weather forecasters because of the potential impact of Hurricane Sandy.

The National Weather Service office at the Greater Binghamton Airport has issued a hazardous weather outlook statement warning that rain and winds may pose some serious problems for the region during the first half of next week.

Local forecasters say the powerful storm "may ultimately impact the Northeast" with the potential for locally heavy rainfall and high winds starting on Sunday and continuing through midweek.

The statement notes there's "significant uncertainty" about the track of the weather system.

Forecasters say some parts of the Northeast not only may wind up with plenty of rain but there's a chance that some areas could receive heavy, wet snow.
