I have a long history with the submarine sandwich!

I attended college in Albany beginning in1967.  My dad, who owned a small grocery store in rural Delaware County, would come to visit me.  We would go out to lunch, and one of our favorite places was Mike's Submarine and Neba Roast Beef at the corner of Central Avenue and Western Avenue.  My dad was mesmerized by this fast paced restaurant.  He eventually took the sub sandwich idea back to his store and started making them for his grocery customers.  It was a huge success.  After college, I returned to my small hometown and managed my father's business, including the sub sandwich business.  It was amazing,.  And new.  Our grocery market became the first sub shop in the entire county!

So, I do love a sub sandwich, I will admit.

This gallery looks at 21 of the best, mostly small, submarine sandwich locations around Upstate New York.  They are in big cities, small towns and villages, and miniscule hamlets.  But all of them put out an extraordinary submarine sandwich.  Of course there are hundreds of places to get a sub for lunch today.  In our list we have included two franchises that (in my opinion) rise above all others for quality subs (you will recognize their names).  Some of these small sub shops are tucked away in general stores, others are on Main Street.  Most are mom-and-pop places just like the one I grew up in.

Because there are so many, we have restricted our gallery to 21 of the best.  So, if your favorite submarine sandwich shop in Upstate New York didn't make the list, we encourage you to visit our Facebook page and give it a shout out!
