New York State Police say they are in no rush to end a standoff in Herkimer County following the shooting deaths of four people, wounding of two others and gunplay between the suspect and police. As of about 10:30 last night, state police say they were going on the assumption that 64 year old Kurt Myers of Herkimer, who was holed up in an abandoned building on North Main Street in Herkimer, was still alive.

Officials say at around 9:30 yesterday morning, Myers reportedly set fire to his home on South Washington Street. Minutes later, shots were fired at John's Barber Shop on Main Street in the neighboring Village of Mohawk where the bodies of 68 year old Harry Montgomery and 57 Year old Michael Rancier were found. Barber shop owner, John Seymour and customer, Dan Haslauer were seriously injured.

Following the barber shop shooting, shots were fired at Gaffy's Jiffy Lube in Herkimer where shop employee Thomas Stefka and 20 year New York State Corrections Division employee, Michael Renshaw were pronounced dead.

At last report, the area around the vacant building where Myers was believed to be locked in was cordoned off.
