April is Autism Awareness Month. Autism and autism spectrum disorder are neurological disorders that impact human development, especially in the areas of socialization, communication and behavior.

Many, but not all people with autism have an intellectual disability.

"People with autism all have different symptoms," said Tracey Lanner, the director of the Thomas Golisano Center for Autism at Springbrook. "It is referred to as a spectrum disorder, meaning there is a wide spectrum of what the needs of each person with autism are.

"We are a residential facility offering lots of options to families who are affected by autism," she added. "We're out trying to spread the word about autism, what it looks like and what resources are available to families."

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that autism’s prevalence in the United States is 1 in 88 children.

Lanner encourages people who want more information on autism and what Springbrook has to offer to please call 286-7171 or go to their website springbrookny.org.
