New York State Senator James Seward has spoken out against the release of man who murdered an 18-year-old woman 24 years ago.

44-year-old David Dart was convicted of 2nd degree murder for the stabbing death of 18-year old Gillian Gibbons in downtown Oneonta in 1989. He’s serving a 25-year to life sentence and is up for a parole hearing in January.

Seward’s letter urges the parole board to deny Dart’s release in the interest of the victim’s family. He had been arrested many times before the murder and has made threatening remarks toward Gibbon’s family since his conviction.

Seward states: “This horrendous crime remains fresh in the minds of the victim’s family, her friends, and the community at large. I see no reason why this confessed killer should be afforded the opportunity to roam free after taking a young woman’s life in cold blood.”
