The New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, New York’s largest gun rights group, as promised, sued state officials in federal court in an attempt to reverse several provisions of the NY SAFE Act gun control law.

The five-count suit alleges the law violates second and 14th amendment rights; restricts interstate commerce by prohibiting the sale of banned weapons and restricting the sale of ammunition; and violates due process rights with several vague provisions.

The gun law broadened the definition of banned assault weapons, increased penalties for illegal gun possession, reduced public access to gun permit information, and required mental health professionals to report concerns about a gun-owning patient who poses a risk to himself or others.

The suit was filed in federal court in Buffalo.
