A former Otsego County man has been arrested for passing counterfeit bills in Otsego County this winter.

Eugene Joseph DeCarlo, 34, of Lewiston, Maine is currently on parole for making U.S. currency in 2005 and for possessing a forged medical prescription in 2009. On this occasion he is accused of paying child support in Otsego County with forged currency.

A Town of New Lisbon woman contacted the Sheriff’s Office in February to report the incident. After investigating the complaint, officials say that DeCarlo gave the complainant fake money which included two $100 bills with the same serial number. A warrant for his arrest was obtained from the Town of New Lisbon court in March 2014.

DeCarlo, who was being supervised by Maine Probation and Parole, had been arrested on a parole violation in March 2014. Otsego County Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested DeCarlo on the Town of New Lisbon warrant at the Androscoggin County Jail in Auburn, Maine, and extradited him back to New York state.

He was arraigned, then remanded to the Otsego County Correctional Facility without bail due to his two previous felony convictions DeCarlo is scheduled to return Wednesday to the Town of New Lisbon Court.

If convicted of the latest charge, DeCarlo faces 15 years to life in prison due to his previous criminal history.
