OPD Chief Doug Brenner Awarded Prestigious LEAF Honor
On September 28, 2018, LEAF Executive Director Julie Dostal presented the Robert S. Sioussat Appreciation Award to City of Oneonta Police Chief Doug Brenner. The award was presented at the 9th Annual Here Comes The Sun Recovery Awards Dinner in recognition of Chief Brenner's outstanding contribution to alcohol, tobacco, and other drug addiction prevention.
Chief Brenner has been involved with LEAF for many years, first as a sergeant and more intently as a member of the opioid task force. In the task force meetings he would report on the law enforcement end of the crisis including trends in substance abuse. As an example, during a recent string of overdoses caused by an unusually strong or tainted heroin, he was able to get the word to the recovery community and in turn, hopefully, save lives.
Chief Brenner stated, "For me, the Oneonta Police Department is more than just arresting people. It is about arresting the dealers, helping the users to not be users, and working with all our resources to achieve the best outcomes". City of Oneonta Mayor Gary Herzig stated, "This is just one more reason why the people of this City are fortunate to have Doug Brenner as our Police Chief".
