On Monday April 29 at 7:30 pm Foothills will present a speech on Human Trafficking and Illicit Marketplaces on the Web.  The speaker will be Dr. Joseph P. Campbell from MIT.  The event is free and open to the public.

Human trafficking is modern-day slavery: extremely lucrative, ubiquitous, and fueled by the internet. Illicit economic activity is increasingly transacted through illegal online marketplaces, including the dark web. The scale and scope of these illicit marketplaces are greatly outpacing the traditional capabilities of law enforcement agencies and victim rescue organizations. To address this challenge, the U.S. government has undertaken significant investments to develop data-driven artificial intelligence tools to counter human trafficking, illegal drugs, and weapons trafficking. Dr. Campbell will discuss several of these technological methods and their impact on federal law enforcement missions.

About the speaker:
Dr. Joseph P. Campbell, Jr. leads the Artificial Intelligence Technology and Systems group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lincoln Laboratory in Lexington, Mass. He graduated from Oneonta High School and earned BS, MS, and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, The Johns Hopkins University, and Oklahoma State University, respectively.

Dr. Campbell specializes in developing and transferring artificial intelligence technologies for government applications and evaluation. Before joining MIT, he taught at The Johns Hopkins University and worked for the government, where his team developed U.S. Federal and NATO standards for voice coding, the foundation of digital cellular telephony systems. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for leadership in biometrics, speech systems, and government applications.
