Snowmobiling is one of the largest winter sports activities in Upstate New York.  And no place sees more riders than in the Adirondacks, North Country, and the Tug Hill Plateau.  This area routinely snags the award for one of the snowiest places in the United States.  They measure the snow up here in feet rather than inches.  And when the snow flies, the snowmobilers come out by the hundreds, zipping along thick, white trails in and out of some of the state's most remote areas.

And then, there, up around the bend, you see it.  A log cabin perhaps, with a red blinking neon sign reading "OPEN." Maybe a beer sign in the window, or smoke curling out of the fireplace chimney inside.  These taverns and restaurants, some of them listed in this gallery, are popular stopping off spots for frozen snowmobilers who stop for a bite, a beer, or just to get warm.

It can be a long hard winter in this region of New York, but these trailside inns and taverns thrive and survive each winter, as the snow flies and the buzzing snow machines pull into their parking lots.  There are many other taverns like this, so if you favorite in this region didn't get listed, please visit our Facebook page and give it a shout out.

We really do want to hear from you!

Adirondack and North Country Snowmobilers Find Warmth and Fun At These Trailside Taverns

There is no snowier place in New York than in the North Country, Adirondacks, and the Tug Hill Plateau region. These tiny villages and hamlets measure their snowfalls in feet rather than inches. In fact, you will see one map dot in this gallery that was once named the "Snowiest Place In the Whole Great Lakes Region." These roadside taverns get buried in the winter but manage to stay open and thrive as legions of snowmobilers come barreling through the woods and stop for a beer, sandwich, some friendly conversation, and to warm up in front of a fire before heading back out into the white wonderfulness of the region. If your favorite trailside tavern or restaurant didn't make our list, please visit our Facebook page and give it a shoutout (Adirondack and North Country area only).

UPSTATE LEGENDS: Cornell University!

Cornell is one of the finest colleges in the United States and is a shining star in the world of New York State academia. It was founded by Ezra Cornell and Andrew Dickson White. Its beautiful campus sits on one of the highest parts of the Ithaca, NY landscape. This gallery does not look at the history of the college but rather takes a look at some of the most famous names that either graduated or attended this legendary college. The list includes writers, politicians, actors, Nobel Prize winners, and other notable names that will poke your memory to bring back their image or story. I mean, who knew that the very first host of the TV game show "Jeopardy" attended Cornell University? You will find him in this gallery!
